Craig Stoddart

Senior Counsel

Craig Stoddart served as a justice on the Fifth Court of Appeals in Dallas for four and a half years after serving for twenty-two years as a prosecutor. Craig’s extensive trial-court skills combined with his experience as an appellate justice allow him to provide his clients with a unique and powerful perspective.


Craig was born and raised in Dallas, Texas, and graduated from Booker T. Washington High school in 1982. He attended the University of Texas at Austin and the University of North Texas before earning his Juris Doctorate from the Texas Tech School of Law in 1990.


In 2014, Craig was appointed by Governor Rick Perry as a Justice on the 5th District Court of Appeals, where he served until 2018. Prior to joining the Court, Craig served the citizens of this State for twenty-two years as an appellate prosecutor for the Rockwall County Criminal District Attorney’s Office. He has presented argument in appellate courts across the State, including our highest criminal court, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. While on the Court of Appeals, Craig heard over 1300 cases and authored in excess of 400 judicial opinions.

Craig and his wife Melissa live in Rockwall, Texas.


  • Represented the State of Texas in approximately 140 appellate prosecutions

  • Authored Collin County v. City of McKinney, 553 S.W.3d 79, an important issue of first impression on Municipal ETJ authority

  • Authored Texas Health Resources v. Coming Attractions Bridal, 552 S.W.3d 335, one of the first health care liability cases involving the Ebola virus in Texas

  • Authored Moldovan v. Polito, 2016 WL 4131890, a defamation and business disparagement case that garnered national media attention

  • Authored White v. Pottorff, 479 S.W.3d 509, a complex business litigation involving “tag along” rights in a shareholder dispute

  • Authored City of Richardson v. Bowman, 555 S.W.3d 670, an important case of first impression involving the constitutionality of red-light cameras

  • Authored Hill v. Hill, 460 S.W.3d 751, a complex dissolution case determining that trial court’s authority over a receivership does not end at final judgment
